Karlstein
The castle of Karlstein is at 40 kilometres West of Prague. Its foundation by the Czech king and Roman Emperor, CHARLES IV, goes back to 1348 and its building was entrusted to Mathias Arras. Karlstein used to be a treasury and a hiding place of jewellery and other worth objects of the Czech kingdom and the Roman Empire. The castle had been rebuilt several times and it had known various styles. By the end of the 19th century, Joseph Moker transformed the renaissance castle in new Gothic.
The castle of Karlstein is very famous for its authentic wall paintings dating of the 14th century. It includes the greatest portraits collection of the Czech sovereigns. We can also find the authentic copy of the king Venceslas I crown; which also belongs to the other kings coming after.
